Ontario’s Wild Weekend on the Roads – Sometimes you just can’t make it up.
In our industry, we can proudly say that we’ve see it all (see, for example, our blog about a car on a roof here: But sometimes a weekend comes by and we are just flabbergasted by the events causing motor vehicle accidents.

- Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of the OPP took to Twitter to report that, “The impaired driver of this vehicle crashed in a police parking lot…said drunk…’I was just following my GPS’”
So are we to presume that if GPS jumped off a bridge, you would too?
- There was another crash on Hwy. 401 near Weston Rd where the driver, a woman over 80, was impaired and hit a barrier.
Guess 80 is the new 20 and careless?
- And our personal favourite: “The OPP also stopped drivers in several bizarre incidents, including apprehending an 11-year-old boy on Highway 400 on Saturday night who had been playing Grand Theft Auto and decided to try driving in the real world.”
11 years old? Grand Theft Auto? You gotta be kidding. Too much.
While many of these accidents were caused by impaired drivers, it doesn’t lessen the burden on each driver to be mindful of his or her surroundings. This is especially true as we enter the holiday season, and there tends to be an increase in impaired drivers around this time. Luckily, the OPP is ramping up its 11th annual holiday R.I.D.E Checks program, which includes increased surveillance and random checks to encourage safe and sober driving.
